Stricken officer receives outpouring of support

West Covina - As an Officer with the West Covina Police Department, Mike Newton battled crime for 25 years. Now, Newton is fighting a degenerative brain disease, but one thing hasn't changed -- he still has backup.

Originally misdiagnosed in 2000 as having Multiple Sclerosis, Newton learned last year that he was actually suffering from leukodystrophy, a condition that affects the 'white matter' of the brain, eventually resulting in the loss of speech, eyesight, and motor coordination. Although Newton can walk with assistance, he has lost the ability to speak.

He has been on medical leave from the Department since December of 2004. More>>

Cory's Kitchen food bank finds new home in Irwindale

Irwindale - After a three-month search, a local food bank has found a new home. Cory's Kitchen will re-open for business next month at 1418 Arrow Hwy. A grand opening is set for May 7 and the group will once again be operating as of May 10.

Folks who show up at Cory's Kitchen do not just get food. Counselors assess their needs and refer them to jobs and other services, such as;  12-step programs, budget classes and computer training programs. Cory's Kitchen lends them clothes for job interviews.

They also hand out food to the homeless, do outreach work to children in hospitals and send care packages to soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to Wayne Leamons, who runs the ministry. More>>
